Hi and Welcome !
Which Graphics Card do you have?
Execute this in Terminal and post output here :
Code:su - /sbin/lspci | grep -i vga grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

pc configuration
i hold a pc which is a bit old. 3.5yrs. its holding amd1.1ghz and 256ddr1.
when i tried suse11 in my laptop, whenever i use desktop effects the system blinks for a moment. is this because of low configuration ?
now i am planning to update by adding another 512 mb ram stick. will i get a reasonable performance with that 700 mb of ram ?

More RAM always helps, especially if you use KDE or Gnome.
I am not so sure though that it will help the desktop effects, since they use the Graphic card.
What graphic card do you have? If you don't know, type in terminaland look for anything like Integrated Graphics Controller or video adapter or anything else that looks like a graphic card. Or post the contents here.Code:lspci

Yesterday i reinstalled the os without desktop effects. in kde4 i found other options for grafix setting in Desktop settings and while applying that also, it logs out.
now the problem is i cant login with kde4 session. it asks for user & password. tries to log me in and again comes back to the login screen.
pls tell me what to do to enable my login in kde4.

You will need to install 3d drivers for your chip set or video card to run any 3d effects.
