Problems with Video/Sound
Greetings,
I've just installed OpenSuSE 11 on my toshiba a105 and I love it. However, I need some advice and help with video/audio support. Here is my dilemma:
I installed flash and could view YouTube videos etc fine (Viewing in Firefox). I wanted support for Windows media so I tried to install VLC but I failed, so I looked in my installed software to make sure VLC was gone and it was. Shortly thereafter, I was viewing content and then the video stopped, had unexpected problems and I have a problem where the audio will just make a repeated echo sound over and over and over. This is a problem for 2 reasons -- 1 I can't view any video content at all anymore 2. it won't allow me to use pidgin b/c of the entry and exit sounds on AIM as well as some other apps -- it gives me that persistent echo of sound.
So...
How do I isolate/fix this problem?
Where/how do I get all media players and codecs to play any media (avi, flash [already installed], quicktime, windows media, etc) ?
Thanks for the help!!!

I don't use Open Suse Brickface so if I am giving you the wrong link, sorry. But after googling your problem, I came up with this troubleshooter from Open Suses site.

Great!
This definitely seems to be the problem; however, when I go into the console and it asks me if I want to download and install the broken dependencies I get errors similar to this:
File './i586/libnut0-0.0.658-1.1.i586.rpm' not found on medium 'http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0/repo/oss/'
Abort, retry, ignore? [A/r/i]:
How do I change that link? This seems to be a common problem with many of the multimedia I've downloaded.

Yast and urpmi aren't my strong points Brickface. All I can do is show you this.

Alright,
Seems I needed to uninstall the OSS link in the YaST software repositories and re-install. Additionally, I made sure many of the other repositories were selected and when I ran the tests again from the console I had good downloads for the dependencies.
Thanks for all your help

Install the software from the videolan and packman repositories - add them via yast2 repositories.
Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE
You probably also need the win32 codecs for windows .wmv support.

Glad you got it sorted.

No Sound
There seem to be quite a few knowledgeable persons involved here, so I have a probably simple question.
I use Suse 10.3 on an HP notebook which came equipped with DOS only. I installed 10.3 from a DVD.
One Problem: When playing any video with flash-player, I get the picture, but no sound. I have XP on the same notebook, and there everything works "normal".
I checked, but could not find anything to configure...
If you can, any suggestions?
Thanks

I never used 10.3 much but seem to remember I also had sound problems but I lived without it.
Does sound play on start up? If not, go to the sound option in yast2|hardware and see what it says. You can also see in the hardware section if the sound card has been detected. If it shows nothing, go back to windows and find out what sound card was detected.
You may then have to add one of the other repositories to get it to come up. (Start with nonoss repo)
Failing this, try suse 11 or 11.1 in a couple of weeks. The network install works fine if you are on broadband.
My sound worked with suse 11.

After configuring the sound in Yast if it still does not work try as root running alsaconf
