old linux machine found in dumpster

I'm totally at beginner level as you will see from my questions, though I have used Ubuntu a little bit mostly with a GUI.

My problem is that Suse 8.x boots up to kde 3.0 in a machine I got from a dumpster without any password being entered. Then I can access 2 home folders of different people. When I try to log in as root, it asks me for the pw which of course I don't have. I'm assuming it was entered for me automatically at boot time (or I guess the user's pw) though I'm surprised that would be possible. Can I look in a file to figure out what it is or change it or failing that, find out what the user's pw was? I'd like to erase all the accounts to try to free up some space and maybe speed up the machine a bit. Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the forums!

Check this HowTo for several different ways to reset root and/or user passwords:

Why don't you just install a newer version of Linux on this host machine ?
