    How can I get to the command prompt?

    hello....i recently purchased a mini notebook made by HP that came pre-loaded with SuSE Linux. I was very happy with the machine for the first week....now I have a big problem....I can't log in....the computer will not accept my password for the user account I created.

    I called HP tech support...an exercise in patience to be sure....and the technician told me what to do to re-set the password from the command prompt:

    INIT=/BIN/BASH
    followed by
    PASSWD ROOT

    the problem is that I can't get to the command prompt....the computer boots to the log-in screen.

    How can i get to the command prompt?

    Many thanks in advance....t

    Try CTRL+ALT+F1

    When the system boots up and you see the grub screen enter 1 to boot into single user mode and then enter "passwd root". You can also change the users passwd by entering "passwd someuser".

    Welcome to the forums!

    Check this HowTo for instructions on resetting root and/or user passwords:

    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...-password.html

    How to get to a command prompt is covered near the beginning of the howto.

    Hope it goes well for you.
