Better to use your built in package tool (Yast in this case) for installing apps when possible.
Otherwise, you can check this HOWTO for installing software (post #2 for installing from source):

If you open this file there should be a read me file with installation information. Alos you can look on the packages development site for information. Since you plan to install from source you may need things like the gcc compiler or other language compilers installed depending on requirements.
It is much easier to install RPM's from a normal Suse repository via Yast rather then trying too install from source.

But Something's Not Right !
The VLC player works in the non-Root User but not in Root. When I click on VLC nothing comes up. How is this possible????????

Not sure what the problem is. Most likely a path set different for a regular user. But The real question is why would you want to. You should only be root when you need to change a system wide process. You certainly don't want to be root to play music or surf the web etc. Unless you wish your system to be owned by someone else?

From the root river.....
I guess I had it inside that since everything flows from the root so it should work there before anywhere else.
Anyhow the thing is, since me and SuSe are just gettin together, I end up hanging out at the root more often than not

I don't know this but just as pure conjecture, some services have a root_quash option where they cannot be opened/signed in to from the root account. This is a safety precaution. As GT said, you should not be playing media or surfing the web as root as it negates much of the *nix security hierarchy.

It is probably best to install vlc from the opensuse vlc or packman repos.
Go to yast>software management>repositories and add them from the' community repositories' option.
This way it will install the required/missing dependencies.
Also look at Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide - openSUSE Forums.

a report
I added the VLC and Packman repositories as suggested, but it didn't seem to change anything.

What version are you using.
Make sure you go to yast>software>repositories.
Click add>community repo
Make sure you have the opensuse-oss , -nonoss as well as the update repo's enabled.
Now go back to yast>software>intall software and filter on packman and vlc then install it.
