There are three plugins that I remember kaffine using (its been awhile so someone please correct me if my memory is bad)
xine
mplayer
gstreamer
Of these three I only ever used xine and mplayer, but would have both of them installed.
Final answer: Install xine-lib (also get win32codecs while you are at it) and see if that works.Linux since: 2001

well what kind of file are you trying to play launch kaffeine from terminal try play the file then post output here
