How to get a downloaded file to work
I downloaded CUPS which I read is necessary to get my Canon MP160 printer to work under Linux. But after downloading I have to select an application needed to execute the file, which leaves me befuddled. Which application do I use? I also read that I have to "set the executable permission" for the file to work which is the equivalent of .exe. But that also leaves me befuddled. How do I set the executable permission?
As a new Linux user I'd really appreciate help with these questions.
Thanks,

Forget downloading CUPS... it will be easier to install using YaST.
From the GUI open YaST and provide your root password.
in the search field type in cups
select the packages you need, YaST will resolve dependencies for you.
Follow the prompts to install.
