suse 10.1 problem

I have a dual system xp windows and a SuSE Linux 10.1
gnome desktop

acer extensa 5220 notebook Intel celeron 1.86

i am novice in the Linux i cant hear sound on the gnome
music browser banshee while the bar of sound in the
highest level and non-muted on task bar, same thing
happend with any sound file on linux system,also can
not download or updates from suse repositories or
PackMan to took up some multi Media packages and
update alsa driver, Xmms, rpm files etc Because I am
not able to define my alcatel speed touch usb
driver until now..

Is there a way know my required plugines to enable
music and video files so i Will download it using internet via windows xp sys,

i want to know how to become root on suse 10.1 and what
i can do to reach these interface is it the terminal
window or what

10.1 is no longer supported the current supported versions are 10.3 11.0 11.1

Can you connect to the Internet ie browse web, email etc?

have you run Yast and registered? (not sure you can still do that with 10.1???)

in theory that should connect you to a Suse repository and allow updates.

have you set any repositories?

In a terminal you can become root by typing
su
then the root password (note password does not echo the screen)

What sound card
If you don't know as root (see above) type
lspci
this will list all pci devices

go to Yast-Hardware-Sound and make sure the card is configured.
if that does not work as root (see above)
alsaconf

Also in order to play restricted formats ie mp3 you need to install the codecs. But, 10.1 packman repositories have been removed!!!!

I highly recommend you install 11.1 instead of 10.1

Yes I have read many of the tips of how to do that but i Wait until the dsl be configured i used this tutorial as reference

is there way to download required codecs manually from external resource so i can able to play mp3 I just want the play mp3 and log internet on these distribution not ask for long-term support iam not use suse distribution for basic purposes but only for experience

i want mention that every time i try to install applications it show me these error !!!

Ok you are trying to install via source code. This normally requires you to have at minimum the gcc c compiler installed. But that is dependent on the exact package. It is much much much better if you install via the repositories via Yast.

Yast-Software-Software Management

You should be able to install gcc from the CD/DVD set that you installed with since it is included but not installed by default.

I also recommend that you install the kernel-source also since at some point you will need it if you plan to play with things.

Following the steps to configure alsaconf after the setup process finshed the sound icon was canceled on the task bar and the time line on music browser freeze but it came back to the natural condtion after i load and lunch sys from another media installation

the original cd is not with me and idownload these media installation anticipation i will need for configure things like these stuff and this from a week ago,but Unfortunately yast not accepted it request to put suse cd 1

can you call me the variance of paid and free suse versions that we can download it from from opensuse site ,the installed one on my laptop cost about 80$ !!

I'm sorry, as i explained ,iam brand new on linux system and
turned to discover linux from about two weeks ago my brother install it form several months but we did not deal with linux cause We do not have any idea of how can handle suse distro or linux on general, mp3 and video support issue surprise us so we ignore the distro for while


it seems to me that I need to download the 11.1 like you say,but iam little worry of what will happen after upgrade like some opposed or common problems that may faced during and after the upgrade is it possiblety this things going well with Windows partition for i.e without partition disappear, hiden etc "suse configured as the default booting system"


the laptop features:

acer extensa5220
dual system operation
intel celeron r cpu 540@1.86ghz
504 mb ram

is it compatible with this distro 11.1

SuSE is pretty good with upgrades. You select the option fairly early on that you are upgrading it it won't trash your existing partitions, and it has solved broken configuration issues for me in the past. SuSE will configure itself as the default OS, but that's easy to change from within yast if you prefer Windows as your default.

BTW: 1.8GHz and 512 RAM (even 8 apparently used for "shared video") should run SuSE nicely.
