Under the K menu, run Personal Settings/Configure Desktop, Then in the left panel navigate to Desktop -> Behavior. In the right panel select the Device Icons tab.

    Configure to your personal preference.

Actually, it should work, I've tried it myself and they vanished...if not then click on the 'defaults' tab to return to the original configuration.
Still, try to trace-back what you did (maybe a slight error or unintended change in the original config.)just before the nagging display of unmounted icons started annoying you.

I'm wondering if then they're not KDE device icons, but rather desktop shortcuts to the devices. The KDE menu wouldn't get rid of those, but if I'm right, they should show up in ~/Desktop

Post the contents of /etc/fstab file and output of this
    Code:
    cd
    ls Desktop
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Konqueror is different form the desktop, it's the equivalent of Windows Explorer. It'll by default always show all mountable partitions detected by the OS regardless of status. Applying the filter is the only way I know to remove the unmounted ones in the list, and sorry, I don't know how to make it stick; documentation is practically non-existent.
