    Welcome to the forums!

Passwords are not echoed to the screen in Linux, so you will need to enter the password just as if it were showing up on the screen, then press ENTER.

Hm, just a guess but it sounds like you're at the command line prompt. From your post I surmise that the user you logged in as is 'mum'.

Is there a graphical screen as CTL-ALT-F7? If not go back to CTL-ALT-F1 to where you logged in and type: startx

That should switch you back to the F7 screen with the desktop you chose during installation (probably kde). If not then it looks like something got broken.

What release of SuSE are you running?

For chuckles last night I installed OpenSuSE 11.0 on a Lenovo Z60t and all went well until I add a bunch of repositories to the software update. It installed a bunch of updates, I rebooted, then kdeinit4 wouldn't run anymore. Did your install a bunch of updates? I ended up re-installing 11.0 and NOT adding the build repositories and all is working well.

I know this isn't a 'technical' reply but maybe it'll help.

    Cheers.

Actually, SuSE 10 does come with manuals... but they're in PDF format so you need to get the graphical interface working first (or have another computer available)

On the DVD, find them in the directory (dvd-rom)/docu/en/
