Cool Suze 11.0 Desktops and ..

    Hello,

I just updated Suze 10.0 to 11.0 and have noticed that quite alot of things are different in KDE.
The desktop(s) are not able to have seperate images on them? I kinda don't like some of the "New" and improved menu etc and am thinking I would like to go back to the more stable KDE but do not know how. Can anyone point me to a easy way to do this besides a reinstall?

I also am having a problem trying to install any program that is not listed in the repository using yast2.
Do I have to move the program to the root directory then click on it or do I use Yast2 somehow?
    It is a *.rar file.

Finally what program is used to open *.rar files? I can only open *.zip files currently?

Thanks ppl for your expertise in advance.

ark can open rar files as long as you have the unrar (or better yet, the actual rar, get from Packman repository) program installed.

The old stable KDE is 3.5, what you're looking at is 4. These packages can be installed in Yast. Your window manager can be selected in the log in window.

    Hi D-cat,

Thanks, I will try to get the Unrar from packman repository.
Window manager is selected (right click) in main window but when I set the default pic for the desktop1 it applies to all the desktops. This was not the case in 3.5. I will try to install to version 3.5 from yast.

    Thanks again for your help.

I d/ld'd the rar program and yast2 says rar is installed but Ark still does not have the rar option??
    Any ideas?

Huh, it works for me. Maybe it's a KDE4 version thing? I know ark has issues with multi-part rars anyway. Otherwise it should load rar files as long as the unrar or rar package is installed.

You can try a different front-end, maybe xarchiver?

    Howdee D-cat,

Yes Xarchiver works. Thanks for the tip.

Now if I could get the different desktops to be actually different. Still exploring the new Suze 11.0 but it seems that I cannot make different pictures on each desktop. KDE crashes alot I notice too but still does not crash the entire system at least. maybe me playing too much too.

Anyone know if 11.1 is more stable or ?

    Cheers

I don't play with SuSE 11 at this time, but I hear tell that updating to the latest KDE 4.2 solves a bunch of stability issues that SuSE 11's KDE4 shipped with. Several people have also dropped to KDE 3.5 to bring back a known stable interface.
