with libraries, when i download them do i have to run the .rpm for them to work? (probably a stupid question)
i'm not sure if i have installed them correctly because when i 'whereis <nameoflibrary>' it just turns up '<nameoflibrary>:'

    Not sure what your asking.

RPM's are just fancy containers to hold installable things.

RPM's will hold the application code but that code may depend on additional libraries or code to work.

In general you should always try to use Yast to install software

    Yast-Software-Software Management

This will assure that all dependencies are resolved.

If you can not find a package in Yast you probably need to add additional repositories (also done in Yast)
