    Problems with SuSe 10.1

    Hi,

I have an acer aspire 5315 laptop. I am a very newbie to linux and I am not so expert in computers. I didn't know what distribution of Linux to use. After trying various distros I rested on OPEN SuSe 10.1.

The Installation proccess was very easy and straitforward, but I have a few problems:

1- The sound does not work at all, although the sound card seems to be detected.

2- The modem is not detected at all by the installation proccess. My modem is an Agree System softmodem.

3- My LCD display supports 1280x800@60Hz (32 bit color) resolution, but I cant set it to this mode by the YaST tool. It seems to be locked to 800x600 (16 bit) resolution, so the graphics is somewhat poor.

    Please help.

The sound and display may heal with newer modules by upgrading to OpenSuSE 11.1.

Softmodems however are a bigger problem. These drivers for the most part have to emulate all modem functions in software, and thus do not use standard devices. Manufacturers generally write drivers for Windows, they don't see a profit in Windows.

Some people do try to write Linux drivers for softmodems, but these are usually limited functionality if they work at all. All I can say is good luck. The following people do such a task, though I don't know if they can help with your particular modem.

Linuxant - Linux drivers for Conexant chipsets - HSF (softmodem) driver
