    No "fn" key (im on a desktop), and there's no controls on the monitor. Commands?

    It totally depends on which monitor. AFAIK most external monitors/crts do not have external (ie program) brightness control. Most will have some sort of on screen menu control usually in the form of a button(s) (often well hidden)

    Refer to you monitors owners manual.

    Try from the command line:
    Code:
    xgamma -gamma 1.5
    You might have to adjust the value accordingly from 1.1 up.
