where to find the updates for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10
Hi,
I am new to Linux, hope I will pick it up soon.
I bought a HP 2133 laptop with intention of learning Linux. As expected it starts with problem
1) I couldn't install any other Distrubution except SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, and the installation DVD provided by HP only can be used.
Ok, there is nothing wrong to begin with SUSE
2) When I installed SUSE & tried to configure customer connection Novell was asking a HP licence key to provide updates, as you can expect HP refused. So I proceed without subscription key Novell did create some repositories and update the system which I have no clue about.
Now as a end user I like to make sure my applications are up to date, I couldn;t install any applications manually. Ex: firefox, skype
every time I try to install, it is failing because of Dependancies, libraries.....
Can you please advise where to begin & what too look for.....
Thanks in advance.

How are you trying to install other distros? What fails? Which distro?
Why would HP refuse to give you the key??
Installing manually can be a big pain. You need to install or upgrade all dependencies required by the application. This may lead to other things that may need upgraded or installed etc.
In the OpenSuse version there is an option in Yast to configure Online Update. Not at all sure about the Commercial version.

the other distributions just keep progressing for 5 hours (Fedora 10) without any information I may try other distribution. Cleverly sometimes the DVD was not recognized.
HP cliams that SUSE is free so no licence key can be provided, if I need update I have to get it from Novell. Novell says if I want the activation I need to buy the subscription

Well I'd say that you need to move to another Distro or the free version of Suse the current OpensSuse version is 11.1. versions 10.3-11.1 are currently supported. I suspect you have a bad DVD or a bad burn or download of Fedora. Read this thread for installation info note thisis for Suse but most applies to any distro

It is apparent that Novell and HP have their wires crossed.

If your sled is legitimate, you should have a licence key. (Similar to windows
)
To activate your updates, you need to create an account with Novell and open yast>software>online update.
If your key is valid, it should be for a year's updates and it will allow you to download, install and update sled 11.
If you want non paid for, go to opensuseand take your chances.
