[SOLVED] Monitor Out of range when starting system

    Hi,
I have got installed the 10.1 Suse Linux. When starting the system, the monitor switchs to the Out of range. When the system goes up, the login screen appears and everythings OK. I have tried to change the resolution but it didnt helped.

Does anybody know how to correct this?
    Thank you,
    Trpu.

    Try this:
    Login as normal.
Open a terminal and type su and pwd.
    now typ init 3
When you get a console, login as root and run sax2 to configure the x-server..
when cinfigured, logout as root and login as normal user and type startx. X-server should now work.
If you have an nvidia or ati video, add the nvideo or ati repo to yast to get the drivers.
Look at: Additional YaST Package Repositories - openSUSE for suggested repos.
Since 10.1 is old in the linux world, consider a newer version.

    Oops...

whych, unfortunatelly, this doesnt work. I`ll get Out of range after init 3. And even if I try to switch to the console manually, pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. Do you know what with that? Regards, Trpu.

Ok I'm guessing that the terminal mode is set to a lower res then you monitor can reproduce.

Add or change the vga= parameter in the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst to one that will provide a resolution your monitor can use here is the table. note you will need to be root to edit the file.

    example

    Code:
        kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18.8-0.13-default root=/dev/sda6 vga=0x317 resume=/dev/sda5 splash=silent showopts
    Code:
         | 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024
    ----+-------------------------------------
    256 | 0x301 0x303 0x305 0x307
    32k | 0x310 0x313 0x316 0x319
    64k | 0x311 0x314 0x317 0x31A
    16M | 0x312 0x315 0x318 0x31B
    That should correct the problem

Another thing that may be easier:
If the live cd gives an F-key option like the full install at the bottim of the screen, use this to set a default resolution.

I found the answser to this problem last Dec in the linuxQestions.org forum. Link to file is Suse/Novell - LinuxQuestions.org. I don't remember which suggestion I did that worked, but I printed 13 pages and I used one of the solutions. The post were from 4-21-06 to 9-09-08. Good luck. Hope this helps
