    Unhappy opensuse won't boot

    Hello,
My opensuse 11.1 will not boot. I get an error message kernal panic, not syncing kill init. Then the computer locks. No, stdin or stdout. I have AMD-K6-2 450 mhz. L2 cache 512 kb, video memory 8192 kb, IDE hard drive, serial port 2f8h, IRQ 3,
parallel port 378h, IRQ 7. The bios Model #: 2170245, serial #: AM7B4RW, version V75EN1T, Date 6-24-99. This booting from CD. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

You did not say how much memory you have. I suspect with that old of a processor that you do not have enough to run Suse. You might try Puppy or DSL distros.

Ok check the checksums for the ISO. When burning the install disk use the slowest speed possible and use good disks not those from the bargain bin.

BTW you system is just barely up to running Suse. I still suggest you try an lighter distro.

Barely as in you want to have that hard drive partitioned BEFORE install, including a swap partition. The SuSE installer can make use of the swap partition if it already exists, but my hang up if it doesn't. Many of the lighter distros can do this for you, or if you can handle fdisk, you can use the SuSE install CD's recovery console.

SuSE will run slow on that computer and use the swap partition heavily. Thus I echo GT in suggesting you try a lighter distro. Puppy and DSL seem to be the favorites, but there's obviously plenty of other choices.
