Clean Shutdown
Hi there,
Was just wondering if it was possible to execute a clean shutdown by pressing the power button on the front of the machine on a suse linux OS? I have heard of someone achieving this but I dont know how to go about doing it.
Thanks.

It is possible as my work machine shuts down when the power button is pressed. My home PC running Ubuntu also displays the shutdown confirmation box when it is pressed
I'm not sure how you would go about making the press activate the shutdown sequence but I would start by checking out ACPI and seeing if there is a event procedure for the power buttonLinux User #453176

is there a problem w/ just typing halt @ a command prompt or logging out and selecting shut down on X?
Afterall if a confirmation box appears when hitting the power button, you still gotta use the mouse to select okay.

Or just hit Enter.

I'm not sure how Suse does it, but on my Ubuntu install, here's what I do.
For the Gnome desktop, I open System-->Preferences-->Power Management
On the General tab, there is the Actions section. You can select what you want it to do when the button is pressed.
This may not have anything in common with your Suse installation, but you may find something similar in YaST. I will look at my Suse box later, when I boot it, and get back to you on this.Paul

My Suse box has Suse 11.0 with the KDE desktop, so I couldn't find anything that would help. I am able to shut it down by just pressing the power button, but I didn't do anything to achieve this. it is that way by default.
