suse problem/wireless problem/everything
OOOOK so ive tried to install suse linux on my macbook with no success because everytime i do it says grub cant mount the partition for the /boot even tho ive allocated 1GB of memory as a /boot partiion and 9GB / for the root..then it keeps asking me to install the bootloader to a floppy disk which i dont even have a floppy drive.
when i hit enter during startup it shows up as being installed but when i click on linux it says that theres no operating system installed and blah blah.
please help.
also still dont know how to get wireless working either.
thank you.Last edited by emmabugg; 08-06-2009 at 09:17 PM. Reason: new problem came up

You know, you just helped answer a question I was thinking about a couple of days ago.
My suggestion would be to reinstall, but do not use a separate partition for /boot. About 20GB for a root partition will give you a comfortable amount of space for future programs, though 10G should be sufficient for basic installs. There's the swap partition (2X RAM, <2GB), then give the rest to /home. That way you don't have as much risk toasing your data on re-installs/upgrades.

Okay, We need information. Please read the following link and post back the requested information.
Wireless Internet Start Here

I cant post anything because i dont have internet when i start linux.
what i can tell you is that its a broadcom bcm4328 wireless a/b/g/n pci built in wireless card tht shows up when you go into the system information under wireless cards but when i go to network manager it only shows the wired connection. when i click add it wants to know a configuration name and a module name and then theres a thing for putting in options i dont know what to do here.
so how do i configure it to show up in network manager??
im about ready to give up on linux...again...

Broadcom cards require proprietary firmware not available to base Linux distro installs for legal reasons. It must be downloaded separately from the manufacturer.
You need to get a wired connection (temporarily) or somehow acquire the Broadcom firmware (included in Windows drivers). When you get the wired connection, install the package b43-fwcutter via yast. When installed with the wired connection, it handles the firmware download and install immediately and automatically.
Otherwise, if you must download separately and install manually (still using fwcutter), I believe it can be done but I don't know the exact procedure (I think Waterhead does)... there was a recent thread about that. Anyway, it's worlds easier if you can do it from the wired connection.

Yes, in Suse there is an installation method just as simple as in Ubuntu. But first you need a wired internet connection. Then you enter this command:
That's it! After rebooting, the wireless should work.Code:sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware
As you can see, getting a wired internet connection is worth the effort. Isn't there someone you know that can let you use their's? How about at school (if you are a student)?Paul

On second thought, just installing the firmware won't work for your wireless.
You reported that you have a Broadcom 4328 wireless. This requires the proprietary Broadcom wl driver. It can be installed by going to this web site.
PackMan :: Package details for broadcom-wl
Click on the "1-click-install" button at the right. It should install the needed driver. Of course, you also need a working internet connection for this too. The alternate is to download all of the needed packages, and install them manually. You will need at least two packages. The broadcom-wl package, and the broadcom-wl-kmp package (kernel module).
The kmp package must have the same version as your kernel version. Your kernel version can be found with this command.
Code:uname -r

ok so i went to that site and clicked on that "one click install" and what do i get? ANOTHER FREAKIN problem!
it downloads a bunch of stuff and then says
broadcom-wl-kmp-lockdep could NOT be installed.
so what is the problem now???
well aside from that my wireless card shows up in network manager now BUT it wont connect to my network even though i put all the correct info in..
my network shows up in the list and all that as well..Last edited by emmabugg; 08-10-2009 at 11:51 AM. Reason: another problem
