4th attempt to update openSUSE 11.1

    Hello,

I have installed openSUSE 11.1 on one of my partitions and for 3 consecutive times, I get a non working environment after updating. Something always happens and I have to rescue through a live cd.

It all started when I was trying to make the wireless run and I was led to this site:

PackMan :: Package details for broadcom-wl

If you notice, there is a 1 click install openSUSE thingy at the upper right side. After clicking, it started to download another kernel contrary to what I was expecting that it would only touch wireless issues. After a full download, I restarted and it would not boot anymore. I did this for 3 times and this is the 4th time I reinstalled openSUSE.

Though I realize that there is a way to use SUSE while keeping the old kernel,

openSUSE Lizards Do You Want Multiple Kernels on Your System?

I would personally prefer to always use a newer kernel. Can somebody please give me some tips on how to update properly? Afterwhich, I would be trying to make the broadcom-wl run again.

May I ask what infos do I need to post from the terminal of SUSE, if there may be, that would help give a clearer picture. I have read some good write-ups re SUSE being a very stable distro and I would really want to try it for myself.

    Thank you very much!

    Cheers!

I think what I would do is, not click that link a 5th time. Update Suse using wired connection if possible and then try getting the Wireless working.

Like Mike says - get the system installed and working without wireless first and then look at Wireless - openSUSE Forums for further wireless help.

    Hello Guys,

After getting hold of a cable and updated c/o yast, my system was screwed up again. This is my 5th reinstall and counting

Or maybe me and SUSE are just not meant for each other

    Be a bit more specific:
In what way is your system screwed up - is it the display, a boot problem or what?
Was this before or after you tried getting the wireless network going?

    Hello,

After updates, I restarted laptop and the grub menu comes up. When I click on openSUSE 11.1, it just gives me an error report and can't continue. I have to esc to go back to grub. The other partitions are working just fine,

This was before I even tried to make the wireless work.

    Thanks

So you install opensuse fine and it runs.
You then update the system and you get an error message.
    Is this correct?
What exactly is the error message and what updates did you do?
Did you just do a normal system update from yast>software>sofware update?

I think you should give up on Suse and try any other distro, this is much more trouble than it's worth. This type of experience would turn me off if I were new to Linux and just looking to check out this "Linux thingy".

If you want to correct the problem knowing the error message is very important. It might also help to know something about the hardware. Maybe someone else has similar hardware. Also are you installing any other packages other then the standard install? Also what do you mean screwed up? Exactly how is it screwed up?
