    Ok, I'm on my Suse 11.0 box. It's in my garage and the wireless connection is a bit flaky.

    To add a DVD to use for adding programs, open YaST. Then this:
    Software-->Software Repositories
    Then click:
    Add-->DVD

    It will prompt you to then insert the DVD.

    I couldn't go any farther because my DVD drive no longer works. This is what happens when you spray polyurethane on woodwork while the computer is running! You shoulda seen the inside of the computer!

    To configure your network card, use YaST too. This time do this:
    Network Devices-->Network Settings

    Find your NIC and click the "Edit" button. Under the "General" tab do this:
    Activate device: On cable connection
    Assign interface to firewall zone: External Zone

    Under the "Address" tab:
    Dynamic Address: DHCP

    Under the "Hardware" tab:
    Module Name: <name of driver module>

    Since we don't know what NIC device you have, I can't tell you what module it uses. If you post the output of this command, maybe we can help you with that.
    Code:
    /sbin/lspci -nn

    Thanks for taking the effort to find your DVD.
    I have re-installed Opensuse 11 and now have only KDE3.5.
    I will try to add DVD from software. From there I will see how the configuration goes.
    Also will post the results of code.

    The wired connection is normally much easier to setup first. Did you try setting it up via Yast? Note you need to have the physical connection set before you setup the software. ie plug it in.
    That is what I tried. I have re-installed the whole thing. It came to the basic installation and installed a few packages. In 'Automatic configuration'. I got the rest done. I did a 'repair' and it said Ok.
    Where would I find kernel, gcc.
    I will try again.

    There should be a point near the end that allows you to choose packages.

    I have to re-install to get to the end. The DVD is still in the drive.
    To install software from the DVD, I get the error 'Cannot access installation media(Medium 1). Check whether the server is accessible'.
    Anyway, I have tried using it through software. then using filter 'repository' and I can see all the packages in the DVD.

    Not for me. I could not see 'Add DVD'. I have added some extra kernels by mistake and they have come on the Grub menu . I have to remove the 2 extra kernels.

    Ofcourse I get the screen for DVD but then it says
    “Cannot accesss installation media(Medium 1) . Check whether server is accessible. The details show
    “Download (curl) error for:download.opensuse.org/distribution/11
    Error code
    Error message; “couldn't resolve host download.opensuse.org'
    The actual message is a website but I am not allowed to send urls in this post.

    Output of /sbin/lspci -nn ( I have to copy it on paper then reproduce it here)
    HTML Code:
    01.05.0 VGA Compatible co ntroller ATI Technologies Inc RC 410 Radeon X
    02:00 Ethernet Controller [0200] Atheros Communications Inc AR242x 802.11 abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter [168c.001c] (rev01)
    06:00 Ethernet Controller [0200] Attansic Technology Corp l200 Mbit Ethernet Adapter [1969: 2048] (reva0)

    I went to Yast--> Network settings and see both L2 100 and AR242x in the 'Overview' tab.
    Both are 'Not configured' and both have error
    HTML Code:
    'Unable to configure network card because the kernet device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan0 devices) . See dmesg for details.
    I could not get dmesg but checked Yast → Misc → messages
    and it shows
    HTML Code:
    'Cannot find firmware file 'intel-ucode /06-0f-0d'
    By the way, I have only 'Add' . The 'Edit' under both L2.100 and AR242x is disabled.

    OK, thanks.

    These devices probably aren't going to work out-of-the-box on Suse 11.0. As you have already found out! The reason is that the drivers are newer than the kernel that you are using.

    You can install the drivers, but it usually means compiling it from the source code. This leads us back to the problem of not being able to install the programs needed to compile a kernel module.

    The solution? Either find a way to install the needed programs, or use a newer version of Suse (or Fedora or Ubuntu). If you look at the contents of the DVD, are there any .rpm files? Those can be directly installed.

    Is there a place where I can download ath5k .I will download in windows and open in suse. When I downloaded madwifi, I could see my network , though could not connect.
    Yes I can use wired connection on Ubuntu 9.04 but wireless is just another issue . I have posted many questions and have tried madwifi, ndiswrapper and wicd for ubuntu , no joy.
