wireless on , no connection

Hi Experts,
am unable to connect to the internet wired or wirelessly.
Systemual Boot :Vista Home premiumand Opensuse 11.0Opensuse 11.0(i586) kernel 2.6.25.5-1.1 , Kde 3 desktop
Wireless driver is Atheros 242x.
Laptop: ASus F5RL laptop.

I have unchecked IPV6 on Network settings.
-I have checked the Network Settings on Yast and on the Overview tab, it says
L2 100Mbit Ethernet Adapter -- Not configured
AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter -- Not configured.
The notes for Wireless says' Unable to configure the network card because of kernel device(eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware(for wlan0 devices). Check dmesg
I have checked and found thatlinux-c9xx firmware.sh[0980]. cannot find firmware file 'intel-ucode /06-0f-od'.

I can see ath0 and my network. But Firefox or Opera cannot access internet.
What is the next step?

Since Suse 11.0 doesn't have the latest kernel (and drivers), you first should install the latest wireless drivers. You can download the source package from here:

This is the driver source code, and must be compiled. Before you can do that you must have this installed:

kernel source
kernel headers
gcc

Then follow the installation instructions on the same page.

You then need to go into YaST and configure your network cards. Allow NetworkManager to control the devices, and use DHCP to obtain an IP address.

I have downloaded madwifi drivers and so can see the network but cant open any website.
I dont find any thing specific to Opensuse in that page. It is general. I am on 2.6.25_1.1
Where would I find this and how do I compile? I see some mac drivers, too.

I didn't say anything about madwifi! The madwifi drivers are on the way out. No new development is being done on them. The driver that is being actively developed is the ath6k/ath9k family of drivers. These are included in the compat-wireless package that I referred you to before.

In Suse, software can be installed through the YaST program.

I know you did not say about madwifi. I have already installed madwifi.
And I cannot install any software through Yast.
This is the message I get:
'Cannot access installation media(Media 1) . chedck whether server is accessible. Download (curl) error for Http:/.... '

How did you install madwifi? The process should be the same for the compat-wireless drivers.

To install software with YaST you need an internet connection. If your wired connection isn't working, try configuring it first in the YaST section for networking.

You can also try inserting the Suse installation DVD, and see if YaST will use that to install software. You may need to do some configuration first, I think there is a Software Sources section in YaST.

I installed madwifi from windows vista in a folder which can accessed (read only) from opensuse. So I download in windows, logout, login to suse , right click and install.

You see both OSes cannot access each other.

I tried 'repair' with Installation DVD. I got the wrong kernel . It says kernel is different. So I will have to burn a new one, I suppose and I dont know what sorts of problems will throw up. Because my Vista is rubbish and it does not burn properly(verification of data , I mean)

NOW MY WIRELESS cannot be seen .
I will see what happens.

Ok. Almost everything can be done via Yast. The needed kernel-source and gcc should be on the DVD. They just are not installed by default. When installing from the DVD the DVD must be in the drive. Alternately you can reinstall and select those packages near the end of the install process.

The wired connection is normally much easier to setup first. Did you try setting it up via Yast? Note you need to have the physical connection set before you setup the software. ie plug it in.
