You can read this short guide to security and it might help you to make up your own mind about the need for any security apps under Linux:

If you're gonna run a Samba server or an email server, I'd run clamav or some other virus scanner.

... just so you don't host any parasites for Windows clients.
They still should have no effect on your Linux machine.

My recommendation is to run RKHunter every few days or weeks no matter which Linux version you use. It's a rootkit hunter which is a concern on any Unix/Linux machine connected to the 'net.
Rootkit.nl - Protect your machine
You should be able to install it using the package/software manager for whichever distro you use.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

Hello everyone
Thanks for all the replies.
I do not run a server, it's a simple home PC for internet browsing, email, playing music & movies, and a few openoffice documents. So from your suggestions, i'd think i don't require an antivirus. Do i still require the RKHunter as Mike mentioned?
I have the opensuse firewall turned on, and i never configured it. I know its 'on' because YaST2 says it's 'on' and offers me an option to turn it off if i want to. Are the default settings ok for the things I mentioned i do on this computer?

Thank you. I'd try installing RKHunter n run it once a week myself. i consider this resolved now.
