    shutting down issue

Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me why my IBM R40 shuts down during installation when it starts loading the kernel. I have installed this on my Gateway laptop with no problem at all. Any answer is greatly appreciated.

Does it just shut off or does it go through the entire shutdown process?

Next time you try the install, go to another console (I think it's F2) to see the read out of the boot and see if there's an error before it dies.

I can't imagine it just simply shutting off....

It does. It does not go through on anything just like you pulled the power plug. And the disk was checked before I installed it on my other laptop. It works fine.
    Thanks for replying anyway.

the only thing I can think is it's pulling a major power draw or overheating.

    Maybe tryin install w/out ACPI

Could be hardware too. A bad power supply will usually cause a reboot, but it's not a stretch that the power would simply be cut.

Try starting with the acpi=off kernel option first, see where it goes from there.
