Installing NVIDIA graphics cards gives grub error 13

So I installed openSUSE 11.1, and got everything from yast2 and then finally got nvidia.ymp or whatever. Bascially, the one click install. When i did that, I couldn't boot into the SUSE GUI. I could boot into the command line but I couldn't start X server.

When I did try the Ec2-openSUSE-2.62.27.9 option, I get grub error 13. It says that the ex2fs file system is not supported, only I did not format it with ext2. I am completely stumped and I'm a newbie. Please help me.

Trying to boot the specific kernel is probably failing because it doesn't exist anymore (SuSE normally deletes old kernels when updating unless you manually disable it) or its being fed bad options.

Boot up in text mode. Log in as root and run sax2 . That'll let you make adjustments to your video mode and test them out.

I did try sax2. It isn't saving my configuration. The optimal screen resolution is 1280x1024 at 67 : 62 kHz and it is not saving that. I adjust it and it tells me that it'll be fixed the next time I start, which doesn't happen.

Ok best to go back to square one. As root edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file replace driver "nvidia" with "nv" or "vesa" This should bring you back to a generic driver. "vesa" should work with anything "nv" is an open source 2D driver. Try restarting the X with init 5. This should get the GUI back. Then you might want to try installing the drivers the hard way (note Not all that hard). You will need to install the kernel-source and gcc by Yast If you have the DVD they should be on the disk if not get from repository. Then go to the NVIDIA site and find the driver for your card there should be instruction on installing there also.
