    Check out this page

    SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

There was problems with the new Pulse Audio system introduced with 11.0. You may consider using 11.1 or 11.2 (available in a couple of weeks) instead.

It might be fixed in 11.1, but I don't know.

    Things to try:
    1. In Yast -> Hardware -> Sound, Edit your sound card, set (or add) the following options:
    Option Value
    model laptop
    enable 1
    index 0

    2. If that doesn't work, go through Yast -> Software -> Software Management. Check Esound and uncheck all references to the PulseAudio server you can (may have to set some to taboo). While you're at it, make sure ALSA is the latest version you can get from the repositories.

Some software applications may have to be manually set to use ALSA instead of Pulse.

    3. If even that fails, install the kernel source files in yast, it's time to build. Go to the Alsa project web site, download the latest source, then proceed to build and install the latest ALSA package from scratch. Instructions should be included in the source tarball.

If you successfully build ind install the latest ALSA and it still doesn't work, you may just have to try a newer distro. I hear this is one that was fixed in the new Ubuntu (9.10), so if you want to stick with SuSE, you may want to go with 11.2RC just to be safe (assured the latest available packages).

    Good luck.

Edit: Sorry, GT, didn't mean to step on your toes... was working on this post for about an hour. I'm glad there's some agreement though... I feel better setting up this path.
