    I have a small question to ask yourself:

    OpenSUSE's worth it to be installed on a netbook?

    (what little question.....)

    Thank you for your understanding and see you soon.

    Hi and Welcome !

    OpenSUSE will be a bit heavy for Netbook. I have never tried OpenSUSE on Netbook but Ubuntu Netbook Remix is best for Netbooks in my opinion.

    Depends somewhat on the netbook specs.

    I don't see why Ubuntu Netbook Remix would be any lighter than OpenSuse. UNR is based on GNOME with a different interface, and to my knowledge isn't any lighter than another GNOME distro. It still uses heavy weight apps like openoffice, Evolution, Firefix, etc. KDE4 is a little more resource heavy, but each release has been improving performance and the next KDE4 release will include a netbook interface.

    KDE is also quite large, so if you're using a small SSD, 4 GB or less, then KDE will take up most or all the space, and you might want to look at other options. GNOME is also large, but not as large.

    (KDE and GNOME are desktop environments, which can be used in pretty much any distro.)

    KDE's new Plasma netbook interface shines in small places

    OpenSuse is also working on a Moblin project for netbooks.

    Welcome to the forums!

    OpenSuse is a fantastic distribution that might suit you if it's not too much for your hardware. You can check over the hardware requirements here:

    I am using Ubuntu Netbook Remix in my Netbook and it is definitely lighter than regular Gnome. I would suggest you to check Minimum hardware requirements at Ubuntu Netbook Remix website.

    UNR
    Minimum hardware requirements:

    * Processor: Intel® Atom™ processor
    * RAM: 512 MB
    * Storage: 4 GB Flash disk (SSD) or hard disk
    Regular Ubuntu
    Recommended minimum requirements

    Ubuntu should run reasonably well on a computer with the following minimum hardware specification. However, features such as visual effects may not run smoothly.

    * 700 MHz x86 processor
    * 384 MB of system memory (RAM)
    * 8 GB of disk space
    * Graphics card capable of 1024x768 resolution
    Perhaps UNR is optimized or Atom processors, hence the perceived performance boost? I can't find any information suggesting they use a custom kernel or do any optimizations. The only info I can find indicates it's just Ubuntu with some extra packages thrown on top to change the desktop around. With the desktop switcher, you can flip between the UNR interface and the normal GNOME interface.

    Yes. Thats why I suggested UNR. I have tested regular Ubuntu in Netbook and performance was not satisfactory. You can make it work with some tinkering though. UNR works much better in Netbook without tinkering or extra efforts.

    There are some netbooks out there shipping with the Moblin version of openSUSE, so I guess openSUSE is a viable option on netbooks depending on the specs.
