    Smoothwall?

    Hi,

I am purchasing a server for my home network. I would usually install CentOS which I use all the time on my Internet Servers, but this one comes optionally pre-installed with Suse. It is tempting because it has 4 RAID drives etc and I know I will receive a fully operational system.

Does SmoothWall Firewall run under Suse?

Any other recommended Firewall that does?

    Thanks.

I don't know much about it, but smoothwall is a linux distribution itself, isn't it?
    SmoothWall Express About
The SmoothWall GPL project was founded in the summer of 2000 by Lawrence Manning (Principle Code Author) and Richard Morrell (Project Manager). Their goal was to create a Linux distribution that could convert a redundant PC into a hardened internet firewall device.
Firewall apps for linux are usually frontends for iptables.

Smoothwall is designged to run on a low spec pc as a firewall. That's all it is - a firewall and nothing else.
I have used it for the last 5 or 6 years and have it running from a 4gig mmc card on an old pentium2.
It is still the best firewall I have used and allows all kinds of customization. e.g. If you want an email server and website locally, use 2 nics and run them on a dmz with no fear of the internal network being hacked.
Like the initial design spec of smoothwall, I believe a firewall is just that. If it is hacked, replace it and not the server or pc.
As a sysadmin you allow/deny acces to the internet and the firewall controls this
Beware, because it's standalone, it will delete everything on the host pc's hard drives..
