Well not really that bad, once you have determined the pattern you put it in a script and run the script. It just needs be thought out.

I'm not sure why you are married to this idea to do a partition image backup. A file backup is more flexible. kdar is a good GUI based file backup it uses dar as the backend program. Then there is rsync which syncs files. The advantage of rsync is that only changes are acted upon so bandwidth and time to update backups is reduced. You can do 'man' or 'info' on dar and rsync. For some reason kdar is no longer in the default repo's but you can search for it. I have it installed and working. An apparent replacement is DarGui but that seems to be broken. Does not work for me any how.
