live dvd comes with more desktops and applications in it.

Most of LiveCDs have most common packages and single Desktop Environment and DVDs have a lot more.
If you have good internet connection then go for LiveCD only. You can install other packages, if necessary, later on.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

The cd is less. An example if you install by CD you will not have the needed libraries to run Skype. You will need to install them via Yast before Skype will run. In other words the DVD is a more complete install.
