I have p4 with 512 mb ram,40 gb hard disk...i want to install linux from live cd..for this i have to download iso image..there are some options in the download ...

diff between i686 and X86_64 installation
I have p4 with 512 mb ram,40 gb hard disk...i want to install linux from live cd..for this i have to download iso image..there are some options in the download option..like i686 and X86_64 option...which one sould I download..i want to install desktop version..I want to know the differences also

i686 is for 32bit machines and other is for 64bit. You can install 32bit OS ( i686 ) in 64bit machine but its not possible to install x86_64 OS in 32bit machine.
Check more details in this thread. I would suggest you to go for i686 only.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
