Joining Domain
Hi
I plan on running scientific Linux or CentOS as SERVER and OpenSUSE on the workstations.
When using Linux do you also join workstations to the server(domain) like with windows server or is it workgroup based?
Can I just mount a network drive from any workstation on the network?
Do you use the server as a gateway?
What is a good book to read to learn all the basics?

you can join a domain with a machine if that is what you need, but you should be able to access most shares unless they are set for domain security level
you can use samba to access windows network shares
the server is only a gateway if you need it to be, does it need to be a gateway for network access for other machines?

Then I will hold off on adding the users to the domain, and see where it takes me. The clients are fat clients, so there will only be a little network traffic. I will only use the server for data storage, email server and as a firewall.
Thanks
