kppp / Suse v11.1 / Dell Inspiron 5100
On this end I've got a Dell Inspiron 5100 with 1GB RAM (it's maxed out now. An oldie but still a goodie, at lease as a backup machine.)
I've tried to install a copy of Suse v11.1 on the old machine and ended up with a very annoying problem with KPPP, one which seemed so familiar but it isn't; "modem busy." It appears on it's face to be an old problem, one which was solved years ago but now surfaces with a new twist, one which I haven't figured out yet and perhaps one of you already have.
I've used Suse v10.0 for years on this machine, with KPPP as a dialer and am quite familiar with the "switches" which have to set in order to get KPPP to operate but something's different with this Suse v11.1 version and I'm not sure just what it is - perhaps one of you do.
To make KPPP operate with Suse v10.0, I've learned to use the following settings:
.1. <root> etc/kppp .... allow (user name)
.2. <root> chown root.root opt/kde3/bin/kppp
.3. <root> chmod +s opt/kde3/bin/kppp
With Suse v10.0 it's just that simple. Using the above causes Suse v10.0 and kppp as a dialer to work constantly and very reliably as a Linux OS and a dialer but I ask you, just what has to be done to get KPPP to work with Suse v11.1? The old and almost self taught hard learned "tricks" with v10.0 just don't work here. Any ideas?

Haven't used dial up for ages and use gnome, but as a thought:
Does 11.1 use kde3 or kde4?
Also, have you tried setting the dialler in yast2>network devices>modem?

Dialup is still quite practical around here. If I need faster access, I can always drive over to on of the local pubs or the library all of which have WiFi.

I'm still guessing that the answer is the same but just where the proper KPPP file is, where I can change owner CHOWN and well as CHMOD, just don't know which of the myriad of directories to look into. Not exactly new to Linux but far from being a "guru" or the like.

OK, then.
In your first post you have:

Try using opt/kde4/....
Everything has probably been moved to kde4 to keep the 2 versions of kde separate.
Or you can try to verify this by issuing:
ls /opt/kd*

Did you upgrade or do a clean install? Updates from 10.x to 11.x can be a problem too much has changed between versions. The old config files may be totally wrong for newer software and updates leave configs untouched in most cases.
