Hi , i am new to linux & this is my first post here...
----------------------------------------------------------
I think you should try to shutdown your computer using Terminal in Gnome . so if there was any problem , the commands will show it and the troubleshooting would be easier ...
i think the shutdown command is :
+ do u have any folder on your desktop that is mount on your /home directory ?shutdown -h now
if so , try to unmount it or mount it to somewhere else like Documents & try again .

I had a similar problem with 11.2, but I only have gnome and no kde. The latest updates fixed this.

Which version of SuSe are you using?
Post the output of uname -a command here.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

not sure what folders have to do with it???
In any case go to yast and check for updates. It would help to know what version. If older the 11.0 there are no updates
