    Install rdesktop on SLES 11

First off I'm very new to linux.

I'm trying to install rdesktop (downloaded rdesktop-1.6.0) on SLES 11 and I'm running into a few problems.
First it requires the following package "xorg-x11-devel-7.2-103.i586.rpm" which I downloaded. After I downloaded it tells me it has all these other dependencies when I try to open it.

Looking at Novell's docs the package is actually on the opensuse CD media, but apparently not on my SLES CD.

    Google: rdesktop install sles

SLES is an enterprise Linux meant for servers. Access to Novell's repositories requires registration and a support contract.

if you have a legitimate copy of SLES, you should be able to install rdesktop using yast, the software manager portion of it

    1) I'm using an eval version (freely downloadable from Novell's website.)
    2) How can I use YAST to install a package I don't have on the machine?

    1) Then you need to get and enable the activation code to get/use updates from Novell:

SUSE® Linux* Enterprise Server 11 requires an Activation Code for access to product updates. Click the following button to receive your activation code. Make note of the code, then click the link under Download Media to return to the download site.
    2) "Not on the machine" = On the media/DVD or in an online repository.

YaST - Examples of how to use Repos

    Novell Eval

How to Use Your Activation Code

During installation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server you will be asked to validate your Internet access. In the Update Configuration Section, the Novell Customer Center Configuration screen will appear. You will be asked if you want to proceed. At this point:

    1. Enter the Activation Code from the Novell download page and your e-mail address.
    2. Click Next. If you prefer not to update now, click No, Skip Update.
    3. Updates can be performed at any time after the installation. However, if there are any updates available, we recommend downloading and installing them to fix known bugs or security issues.

You are now ready to begin your evaluation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

NOTE: The only limitation of this evaluation software is the duration of your free access to update.novell.com. Should you choose to purchase a subscription for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, you will be provided with a new Activation Code, which you can easily update in your machine or in Novell Customer Center, in order to re-enable access to update.novell.com for product patches and updates.

You are now entitled to get your 60 days (or 180 days for System z) of patches for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server by: entering your Novell username and password during a YaST Online Update; downloading them via Novell Customer Center; or manually downloading Service Packs and patches from download.novell.com

** I just checked the DVD media for SLES 11 and did not find rdesktop. I cannot confirm if rdesktop is available from a Novell repo - that is why I posted the link showing how to compile rdesktop from source if needed.

Thanks a lot for the response- I'm reading that novell article now.

Well I actually haven't activated this- I download it a while back and I don't remeber which email address I used.

I guess I could figure it out and activate it, but I'd like to learn how to do this manually. Like I said I'm new to Linux and if this was some more obscure progam I wanted that wasn't available from Novell's site how would I go about installing it? Do I just keep resolving dependancies by added more packages?

Maybe I should have posted this as a more general linux question. When you need a package or software do you often find yourself scouring the net/rpmfind.com or are you usually able to get it easily though YAST/yum/aptget/whatever?

Yast or whatever package manager will resolve the dependencies automagically. You can get into trouble doing things manually, like installing wrong version number etc. If the distro offers a package, I tend to take it as it has at least been tested and will work on your distro

Cool thanks. I wasn't sure about that. I'm gonna see if I can activate the eval and do it through YAST.

Do you really need the Enterprise version.? Are going to be using this in a commercial setting? If not you might consider OpenSuse 11.3. It is the FREE as in beer version. There are no download restriction.
