    Suse 11.2 monitor help

    Hi Guys,

Right I new to linux, but i've installed suse 11.2 on an Acer laptop with Gnome 2.28 without any hicups. Everything working. External Harrdrive, USB Mouse & Keyboard. So been playing about with it and installed a Mac Theme which worked.

Now I thought i'd start using the laptop through my Hannon 25 inch monitor, but i pluged it in set it to not display on the laptop only on the monitor and the monitor jsut displays wavy lines. Which i think is because it doesn't have the drivers for the monitor?

Any help would be much apprecaited

    Thanks

    Hi and Welcome !

You don't have to install driver for Monitor in Linux. Press Alt+Ctrl+F3. Does it switch to command line mode and display text properly? Does machine boot up in Single User Mode with that Monitor?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Right i've rebooted it again, and its now showing my desktop and i can move the mouse around can't actually see the cursor, but i got on display setting and the 12800 by 800 not displayed which is not the resolution of my screen. so everything displaying wrong.

ALT + CTRL + F3 just got me a blank screen.

In display prefrences the display has

    Mirror Screen. Deselected

Monitor CHi Mei Optoelectronics corp. On.

And the it has Laptop 15" Off.

If display is working randomly then I would suggest you check cables.
In any case, you have to reconfigure Display settings on changing display.

I know the cables are connect properly and it working because i can boot it in windows fine.

It also works when the screens are set to mirror the Laptop Screen and The Monitor screen on 1024x768 i just can't get the right resolution up for the monitor to get it to display on its own.

How do i reconfigure Display settings

Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here.

Very odd. Is that all there is?

What video chip in the beast? Is this running in a VM? I'm wondering why there is VM references.

Where did the xorg.conf come from? 11.2 may not need a xorg.conf file. Have you tried to install the proprietary driver for you chip set? That is usually need for multi-monitor configurations.
