I have had issues with drivers as well. I am just a user as well so .....

If you have the nVidia repository added and you know what your card is, the best I can recommend is look at each of the 3 driver sets to try to match to your card. It also seems better to run sax2 from run level 3 to set your display. While setting the display, take note of what your monitor is recognized at. I kept trying to increase the resolution on one system and failing till I noticed it had the monitor set as a generic display of 800 by 600 max.

hope it is a little helpful

Have you installed the NVIDIA propritary driver? This will give you the best performance.
