CDROM install problem
I have a ASUS P5E3 WS Professional motherboard. The IDE
connector (hence the CDrom Connector appears to be
controlled by a Marvell 88SE6145 serial raid controller on the
motherboard. The
CDRom isn't part of a raid, but it shows up in the raid
config during powerup, instead of in the usual place in
the bios.
There is no OS installed. If I try to bootup with a Linux
install CD in the drive, the computer does it's usual
startup routine, finds the Linux CD and loads it. But, later
the install when install software tried to do another read,
it cannot find the CD; "put CD#1 into the drive and hit any key".
I have tried other software and the same thing happens.
Any ideas?
Sincerely

Looks like the controller needs a kernel module loaded to enable cd reads.
I should imagine to save space the live cd doesn't include all the modules, but the dvd probably will. (The live cd is a minimal system and to save space won't include everything.)
A workaround is to either load the module at boot time as part of the boot parameters or to copy the iso to a usb thumb drive and use that to install instead.
To copy iso to usb stick look at: Live USB stick - openSUSE

I finally figured it out. The DVD-ROM is controlled by the Marvell
chip. On a new machine, it defaults to the "RAID" mode. In
raid mode the cd-rom won't work. You have to go into the
bios are change the Marvall to "Legacy" mode to get it
to work. NOT DOCUMENTED....
(Once the Marvell drivers are installed in the OS, the DVD-drive
can be read in any mode.)
Sincerely
