Known issue.
Flash s***
No workaround, other than throwing enough horsepower at it.
Complain to adobe. I am serious

yeah, Flash is about the biggest piece of crap software I can think of on computers today. How it became so popular I'll never know .... other than throwing more hardware as suggested, there isn't much you can do.

I remember Flash 10 actually was a major performance and stability upgrade. However, things like video still suck the life out of the system and fail to play smoothly. My primary machine is 3GHz dual core, and after a few videos have run, I start getting occasional pauses in the system, even after the pages the videos were on are closed. Top reveals it's coming from firefox, cpu jumping to 100% for those paused moments, and the only way to return normal operation is to completely close out firefox. This leads me to think that flash has a memory leak problem and does not shut down clean, so every flash app you load just sucks your resources a little more.
This is Adobe's problem as they remain closed source, we just have to deal with it. There are alternatives to Adobe flash that actually perform much better, but also have a lot of compatibility issues (e.g. no video). Desktop Linux is not a commercial platform, so Adobe doesn't see sensibility (read "profit") in improving the Linux plugin, as long as it performs well enough to display advertisements.
