Is it every site or only certain sites that you get this?
I have found some sites have badly witten flash and it hangs firefox. When I restart firefox and go back to the site, it's fine.
Flash on linux is pretty buggy at the best of times.

The problem is there every time a flash application is required. I cannot properly view youtube videos or any other multimedia that requires flash. I suspect this might be an update problem since the system used to work fine out of the box after the initial installation of the flash plugin

If 64 bit, try adding the 32 bit compatibility in yast2>software
