What you're looking for is no called widgets. You can right click on the current widget, probably you're /home directory and close it. And then you right click on desktop and add widgets or go find one that appeals to you and install it.
whatever is on a desktop any more is either an icon (short cut) or a widget.

Be default KDE4 is set up to have a folder view widget that shows the Desktop folder.
If you want a more traditional "Desktop" Right click an unused area and select Desktop Settings there you can select the type, back ground, folder to show etc of the "desktop"
You add Icons ie shortcuts by left clicking a folder view (widget or whole desktop) and select create just like in Windows.
This is really a new idea of having workspaces where each work space is made up of widgets and tuned for certain ways to work. You might have a work workspace and a play work space a video work space or any combination you can dream up.
