    New build installation problems

    Hi

    I've just upgraded from

    Asus M2N32-Sli Mobo
    Athlon 4200+
    3GB RAM
    Nvidia discreet graphics
    Creative sound

    to

    Asus M4A88TD-V Evo Mobo
    Athlon 640 X4
    4GB RAM
    ATI Built it graphics
    Built in sound

I'm using SUSE 11.3 KDE4 installing from Live CD

I managed to boot into my exisiting linux install using failsafe and from there I figured the drivers would need sorting out. I managed to get the sound sort of working and then I installed the latest kernel and the ati rather than nvidia drivers

Now it wont boot a GUI at all, but Windows works fine

I have 3 kernels installed (old PAE, new PAE, Old default) one will boot into a console where I can access yast and tried to remove the ATI driver but it didnt make it work again. Startx hangs the system unless logged in as root, when it throws and error saying see xorg.org or some similar x website.

Nothing on the install partition is important, all data is on the same HDD but on different partitions which I need to keep but can access from windows if I need to right now

I tried to reinstall from the Live KDE CD but it hangs, have tried to use the defaults, VESA graphics, text mode, No ACPI, PNPBIOS=off but still won't boot live CD or install.

Cannot even get the "media test" to work, altho memtest runs fine

    Any ideas??

Do you get any error message when booting your Linux?
Which Linux distribution are you using? KDE is a desktop environment, not a Linux distribution.

As I understand you can boot all your kernels therefore it's not a kernel driver issue, right?
Could you please post the exact wording of your Xorg error message?

Before I installed the new Kernel and ATI drivers I could boot into full GUI linux with some graphics and sounds issues using failsafe. Now I can get into a text console using failsafe on one kernel

    Errors are:

    2.6.34.4-0.1 (Desktop)

    Code:
    [input]startx

Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist
    No Drivers available
    No Screens found
    Check log /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    2.6.34.4-0.1 (PAE)

    This one hangs -
    Code:
CDROM (ioctl) error, command Xdread, Read track...
    Sense key: Medium Error [current]
    Add, Sense: L-EC Uncorrectable error
    System then hangs

    2.6.34-12 (PAE)

    Code:
    Mount: Unknown filesystem type "ext4"
    could not mount
    System then hangs

Using the CD to install GUI mode hangs with no message, text and vesa display "loading modules from udev" and then hangs

Is there a verbose way to run the installer as I really want to reinstall, I know it should work as the system would work albeit on a previously installed OS

Unplugging the CD-Rom drives enables 2.6.34.4-0.1 PAE to boot as far as the default can (from this point its a graphics issue) fsck and clean windows shutdown cannot help 2.6.31-12 to boot.

I have no idea whats stopping the install disk working as the motherboard (the only essential change) is supposed to be supported from suse 11 onwards

    help much appreciated

    Jonny

fglrx is the ATI driver. You apparently have not installed it correctly.

See if the instructions here help
