Wireless Problems with Suse 11.3 Broadcomm 4311
I recently installed Open Suse 11.3 in a Dell Inspiron e1705 with a Broadcomm 4311 wireless card. I think I've done almost everything I found in all the forums regarding this problem but I'm still unable to use the wireless conection.
It's reading it as an "eth0" instead of a "wlan1". I'm new with Linux and lost.... I've uploaded a txt with all the information of the machine that I could read from a thread I found. If you need anymore information, please let me know.
Thanx...

Can you open your network tool and create a new connection, the device name is eth1 as far as I can tell, everything appears to be okay.

Yes, I can... I'm going through Ifup. In the overview tab, I have 2 options:
1) BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN DHCP
2) BCM4401-B01 100Base-TX DHCP
If I plug a cable, it does work fine.
Now, here in the "network settings" the interface is recognized as a wlan but in the system it's not. It's an eth0.
Also, I've tried to configure the wireless card accordingly to the specs of my AP but nothing happens.
Might there be a conflict between the eth0 and the wlan1 interfaces? They're both trying to do the same thing and "kill"each other in the process.
I don't know what else to do.
Thanx

I see one problem.
Your computer has both network devices that are made by Broadcom. The LAN used the b44 driver module and the ssb driver module. The wireless is trying to use the wl driver module. There is another Broadcom driver named b43, that also would use the ssb driver module, this one currently is not loading. The wl driver will not work as long as the ssb module is loading, but removing it will make the LAN connection stop working.
I hope this is not too technical.
The solution? You can remove and blacklist the ssb module, then you should be able to configure the wireless. Or, it appears that the b43 driver does support your wireless. So using that, everything should work OK. I think that you should try the second option, so do this:
1) Unload the wl module:
2) Install firmware needed for the b43 driver (you need a working LAN connection):Code:sudo modprobe -r wl
3) Load the b43 driver:Code:sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware
4) Open YaST and configure the wireless under the Network cards section :Code:sudo modprobe b43
- Tell it to use NetworkManager instead of traditional ifup.
- Allow all users to control the device.
- Use DHCP and DNS to get the IP address.
5) Save and exit.
Now try NetworkManager to connect wirelessly. It usually can be found in the taskbar, next to the Date/Time.
This is only a temporary fix, and will not work again after a reboot. If it works, it can be made permanent by blacklisting the wl module.Last edited by waterhead; 10-09-2010 at 12:34 PM.

When I write the instruction, it gives me:
mauriciohg@maulinux:-> sudo modprobe -r wl
root's password:
sudo: modprobe: command not found
I tried it twice and the same response.
Also, I already installed this one
sudo /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware
I do have the "cabled" network....
Thi thing is that when I use ifup instead of NM, the port gets the IP through DHCP; when I change to NM, it won't get an IP.
Any clues?...
Thanx!

When you use ifup and it gets an IP, is the LAN cable still connected? Have you tried removing the cable and then try the ifup command?

No, the cable isn't connected... Actually it gets the IP from the AP but it won't surf....
Thanx!
