    Not necessarily either of those. It's usually stored on the first sector of a disk, or in other words the first 512 bytes of the disk.

    Did you mean a copy of the MBR?
    I have a 512 byte file called stage1 in
    my /boot/grub directory. That is
    most likely a copy of the MBR.
