Need advice on protected desktop solution

We are looking to redesign the network for our patients. It is an absolute necessity that they not have any access to the outside world. They should only be able to access the data on the server. We are currently using a NetWare 6.5 server, Windows XP workstations with ZENworks locking them down.

The solution we are looking for should be able to protect the desktop OS and C: drive from tampering. Ideally we'd like to see the whole desktop environment be temporary. We envision them logging in with their own unique ID, using the systems to access the programs from the server, saving their data to their own home directory, then when they log off the existing desktop environment reverts back to a clean system.

We haven't decided on what server OS we'll be using, but I'm pushing for SuSE Linux with Novell's eDirectory for authentication. I haven't found out whether or not the apps they'll be using are Windows-specific, but I hope not.

I would appreciate any advice someone might give.

    Thanks!

    Z.

You have a very specific idea of what you're looking for, in a niche area, so I doubt many people here have direct experience to guide you. Generally speaking, everything you're asking for can be done and Suse is a perfectly fine choice.
