    Ubuntu User

    Hello Everyone,

I am an Ubuntu user, but I have been considering making the conversion over to OpenSUSE. I'm planning on using it for my home computer.

Does anyone know where I can find a legitimate pro and cons or comparison sheet?

I was also hoping someone here could give me some brief details about why they like OpenSuse (possibly some details about YaST)

    Cheers

Hello and welcome to the forums!

The only way to have a legitimate pros and cons comparison sheet would be to create it yourself based on your own experience with each distro because different people see any pros and cons differently. I'm personally not a fan of either distribution but do prefer Ubuntu because of the package format it uses and the package tools available for installing those packages. That said, you'll find plenty of users that prefer RPM packages and Yast. Hopefully, some of them will reply with their own views and opinions.

Good luck to you with it, either way.

    Howdy and welcome
I'm not positive but I think OpenSuse is a LiveCD so you can boot it up and take it for a cruise before you install it to your machine...or try it out by using VM software like Virtualbox which should be available in the Ubuntu repos.

I guess what it is I am really looking for is someone to tell me about their experience using OpenSUSE, or why they like YaST. That said, this doesn't need to be a comparison between Ubuntu and OpenSUSE. What distribution do you use? If you use a GUI, tell me about it. I am interested in hearing what people have to say.

I used Ubuntu for about a year, beginning with 8.04 and ending with 9.10. At some point in that journey, I installed Kubuntu and decided I preferred the KDE environment, but Kubuntu's implementation of KDE didn't feel quite mature. It felt like an afterthought without real conviction to the same quality experience I'd had in the Gnome version. So I began searching for distributions that were built with KDE as the native desktop environment and quickly found OpenSUSE.

I installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my main desktop and a laptop, have since updated to 11.3 on both, and have had no regrets. I think YaST is slick, and I like the "One Button" software install concept, but as I've explained, that's not why I switched.

In addition to the typical desktop/laptop uses; internet (wired and wireless), email, photo/music file management, and Open/Libre Office and pdf document viewing and editing; I've been teaching myself Java programming using Eclipse and the latest Sun/Oracle JDK. I've had no problems and consider the whole experience satisfying with no real problems experienced.

The Ubuntu Forum is "better" than OpenSUSE's in that it's more active with broader topics and a better chance to find an answer to a common Linux or Java programming question, but the OpenSUSE forum has always come through if I needed an answer to a question specific to OpenSUSE.
