    Software RAID

    Hi

I have a Dell Windows7 PC configured with BIOS RAID1. I want to install SLES10 and configure it with Software RAID1. My question is: Do I need to reconfigure the BIOS RAID setting and if so What should it be.

    Thx

If you are overwriting the Win7 install, you can boot the SLES CD and just install using the default Linux md driver/RAID.

If you're trying to keep the Win7 install, you'll have to look at getting dmraid loaded before installing SLES.

That BIOS configuration means a hardware RAID. IF you'll use software RAID, you should disabled it on BIOS.

    No, it doesn't. Fakeraid

Whether a Linux OS sees the drives independently or as one "raid" volume just depends on what driver is loaded. If not using the "fakeraid," turning off the "raid" in BIOS is a safe step - although not always necessary.

HROAdmin26, you're probably right in this case. But it depends of the hardware provider. Some servers from Dell and HP have this option that enables an onboard RAID controller that makes RAID on levels 0/1/5/10.

The problem is that FakeRaid is a very simple (and bad) solution, and probably doesn't have the properly devices, as you said, to make the Linux OS see the RAID group as one disk.

There is no need to even mention a PERC, SAS5/6, Smart Array, MegaRAID, etc. These also all have an independent "BIOS"/configuration system (separate from the system BIOS) that's pretty hard to miss.
