    Creating Partition for OpenSuse

I am a newbie to Linux. I am currently running Windows 7 and looking to have a dual boot system. I started by going through the Windows Control Panel to shrink the current partition. This left me with a 7.75 GB recovery partition, a 100 MB system partition, a 160 GB partition for Windows and 130 GB unallocated.

My question is (1) do I need to do anything with that 130 GB partition that is unallocated and (2) when I run the OpenSuse CD to install, how do I make sure it installs to that 130 GB partition?

Hello and welcome to the forums!

The OpenSUSE installer should allow you to create any partitions that you want using the unallocated space. 130 GB is far more space than you really need to install Linux, but you can use it all if you wish. I usually make my / partition (root) about 10 to 20 GB, my /home partition about that same size, and I don't use a SWAP partition at all, but you might want one if you don't have much physical RAM, or if you tend to open and run lots of apps all at one time. SWAP size is often computed at twice the physical RAM amount, but that doesn't always apply these days, at least in my own opinion, hence me not using any SWAP at all.

Just make sure you don't allow the installer to format the Windows partition(s) if you want to keep Windows.
