    Angry Unstable SSH connection

    Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my SSH connection on 2 different types of SuSE (OpenSuSE 11.0 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11). However, I'm definitely not sure the problem is with the linux boxes, I'm just looking for any kind of hint...

Basically I've been connecting to the SuSE computers via SSH from a Windows XP box using Putty for 2 years and it was working flawlessly. About one month ago I got "upgraded" to Windows 7 -- no change on the Linux machines. Since then the Windows box drops the SSH connection about every other time I'm using emacs within Putty. It happens either right while opening emacs (before displaying the content) or while loading a file -- may even have happened while saving, I can't really remember. All I can say is that it's always connected to emacs and happens so often it really gets on my nerves. However, I have absolutely no idea what might be causing it (it's probably related to Win7 because that's the only thing that changed, but how could that be related to emacs??).
When the connection is dropped I get a dialog box stating (translated from German): "SSH, Telnet and Rlogin client stopped working -- A problem has prevented from correctly executing this program. Please close the program". From there there's nothing I can do but actually close the whole thing... Luckily of course that closes only the current instance (I mostly have 4+ sessions at any given time) but that's still annoying...

Does anyone have any idea how I could find out more about it? I haven't found anything relevant in the logs -- the successful SSH login is listed in /var/log/messages but there's no mention of the disconnection. I couldn't locate any relevant emacs log that might tell about a crash or anything...

Thanks a lot your help and ideas!

    Cheers

I'm not really sure what's going on here, but I wonder if it is really only when you're using emacs, or does any X related application kill it. Does it happen if you try to open an xterm or any other new X window?

This might help you narrow down whether it is Putty that doesn't like Win7, or if it is your X client.

    Hi smolloy,

thanks for your reply. However I'm not using any X client (AFAIK X is not running on the server, nor should it), only putty's terminal (and the console version of emacs).
And yes, after a few days I can tell that *only* emacs is causing that problem -- then again, I'm not using that many other apps, only the usual tools like top, java, diff, built-in commands, ...

For the first time today it also killed a session that wasn't even the active one (not the active window), and therefore shouldn't have been doing much apart from waiting for some input. I can also tell that the connection also sometimes drop simply while normally using emacs (browsing a file, typing, ...).
