installing tar.gz files (I DID look other places!)

Okay. I googled this for 20 minutes and nothing made sense- it was either in Spanish or listed off commands in ways I didn't know how to even start.
I'm trying to download V bam. I have the tar.gz file. I don't know where to go from there. I've read things about opening console- is that the same as terminal? What do I do once I get there?

Check this HowTo for installing software from source:

Other parts of the HowTo cover installing packages in other ways.

You can install using the console or a terminal. More on working with commands and the command line under Linux here:

Unless you have good reason to install from the command line, it's usually easier to install software using the default package tool for your distribution. That would be Yast if you are running *Suse:

I got up to unzipping the file, but there is no readme or install file.
